Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting. ~ George Orwell. Traditionally, Riversiders have tended to get stuck in, and more generally, to do unto others before they do unto Riverside. While some may say that that is not fair play, it is in our view, the only way to take the game seriously. Hatred is a Riverside family value because we hate to lose. Too often people discount hatred as a bad thing, to be loathed and rooted out so that no one becomes infected with its insidious impetus. Jealousy? Us? Well, yeah we are jealous. We are jealous of every good play made on the pitch by our teammates, or at least we should be. We are jealous of Skip drinking beer on the sidelines, or we should be. Boastfulness, yeah we are boastful. We boast about goals, assists, slide tackles, hard fouls, and yellow cards. Disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence. No explanation should be necessary. Lets face it, most people do not like us because of the above-mentioned philosophy. They see us as being disrespectful and sometimes belligerent. Well, hell, maybe we are. But it just goes to show you that Riverside is serious about its sport. I wont get to Rah Rah Go Team here, but I guess that I am expecting a lot of all of you, and of myself this season. We have to fight our way out of the bottom division. This is war.
